I failed the same algebra class three times.

I was a highly logical thinker. I had written software and understood computers in a very intuitive way, at a fairly young age.

But I SUCKED at math.

I hated it.

Struggled with it.

I struggled with that algebra class - I failed it twice in high school, and then again at my first round with it in college.

Then I went to music school at a conservatory for the arts.

In the school there was a department that developed what are commonly referred to as "general studies" but at this school it was called "critical studies." There I heard they were offering a course on the history of mathematics. I'm not quite sure what drew me to it, but I took the course.

Suddenly, I understood algebra. Because of stories. Because of history. Context helped me to understand.

Why do the cartesian coordinates exist? How did their discovery influence art and music? What is an imaginary numbers? How were they discovered? What is a variable and how did we come to understand them? What was the purpose of algebra?

That was the way that I came to understand algebra.

I was recently speaking with a friend about meditation and sharing some things that I had learned. I invariably went down a path of talking about the Buddha, and how he came to discover these amazing technologies that we often call insight meditation.

Buddha was not the first to develop these techniques, nor has he been the last. There are many people who have worked with them, refined them, and developed the existing ones further. They even created new ones.

I am creating this site to share stories that open up some of these techniques for you. It is my aim to make them interesting to you, such that you are inspired to develop a practice of your own. I will aim to share context around the techniques. Why do they exist? What are they useful for? What was their creator seeking in developing them?

It is my vision for this site that it unlocks a love of meditation in you. It is my wish for you, that you begin to see meditation for the incredibly useful - in my view, magical - toolset that it is.

This toolset will help you to live a better and more meaningful life.
